What Architects Want? 8 Gift Ideas

As the new semester begins and the fall is filled with holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, let's create a gift wishlist for architects!

The first idea that comes to mind will be pens and notebooks. An architect never has enough drawing pencils, sketch markers, fountain pens and sketchbooks, that’s true. But let’s try to choose little different gifts.

In similar lists, you will often see the LEGO Architecture Studio Playset, essential books such as S, M, L, XL, model building kits, skyline chest sets… Oh, speaking of chess! See what’s really cool:

1. Bauhaus Wood Chess Set!

This design is a reproduction of the original handmade luxury version by Bauhaus sculptor Josef Hartwig. I really love the minimal geometric design which follows a very important function: The thought behind this design was that the shapes and symbols of cubes, cylinders and balls should lead you to move by move to checkmate.

Knight and rooks are so outdated now!

2. The real checkmate feeling is when you get up from your desk and seeing your laptop is following you. And if you see a cup full of coffee spilled… Well, it’s very obvious that I’m gonna start praise wireless headphones.

You can find a lot of options according to your budget and style. But it must be noise-canceling so others around are not disturbed and you can focus more easily. And should be very comfortable for use over long periods of time. And maybe can be foldable… Any way you choose!

3. Let’s stay a little more comfortable before we get creative. It may not be aesthetic as colorful chair cushions, but support pillows are life-saving items for architects! A wise old man once said: ”Never underestimate the back pain.” (fun fact: i am the wise old man)

4. Looking for a very affordable but very thoughtful gift? You’ve come to the right place! What better way to express that you care about someone than to make sure they are not lost among the recovery files? Oh these Ctrl+S stickers! I wish I had it tattooed in time.

5. If we’re talking about the needs and loves of architects in a list, there should be absolutely coffee in it. There may not always be time to get up to freshen up coffee. Or, as time goes on, you’ll be gourmet enough to realize that no coffee is “that coffee.” So it’s best to put enough coffee in the thermos and take it with you. Could it be more coffee words in this paragraph?

You can choose different models according to size and design, I’m leaving a classic model here:

6. Then let’s continue with some special unusual office supplies. Le Corbusier Modulor Rule!An excellent, innovative, fun gift for an Architect, the Modulor tape, which is based on the famed master-architect, Le Corbusier’s, unique anthropometric scale of measurement. It is more suited for display/decoration rather than a lot of actual usages.

7. Let’s move on to things that are really convenient to use and that every architect will love. Really, give the architect something concrete, anything! They’ll love it! Pen tray, pencil cup, memo pad, cardholders, phone stand..All perfect. So far my favorite items are a staircase-shaped pen pot and tape dispenser.

8. I’ll finish this list with a home decor design gift.

These glass vases were designed by Alvar Aalto in 1937 for the World’s Fair, this vase exemplifies Finnish Glass Art. This vase can also stand alone as a small work of art. Aalto created organic, flexible forms that lend each vase towards the “celebration of light”.
