Unleash Your Creativity: Architecture Events Of The Year

Many events have been affected by the pandemic within the past two years. Some of the events were rescheduled, and others were held online. In 2022, it seems like we will see the restrictions slowly fading away. Let's see what is coming up for architecture this year all around the world.

• West < > Africa Architecture Biennale – February-July 2022

This is the very first West < > Africa Biennale. It opened its doors on 20 February, and it will stay open till 31 July.

It is organized by the A3-Archnet Collaborative, a joint between A3: Archives of African Architectures and Aga Khan Documentation Center of the MIT Libraries. The biennale is curated by Baba Oladeji and Michael Toler.

• Asia Pacific Architecture Festival – March 2022

Asia Pacific Architecture Festival will be held in Brisbane between 12 March and 25 March. The main theme has been announced as “co-operate, co-design, co-exist”. The program includes exhibitions, installations and lectures some of which are also available to attend online!

• International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo – May-July 2022

The International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo will be held between 21 May and 10 July. The theme of the year has been announced as “reconstruction, in the face of the intense transformations in spaces and social dynamics brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic”.

• A’22 AIA Conference on Architecture – June 2022

A’22 AIA Conference on Architecture will be held in Chicago between 22 and 25 June this year. Tours, seminars and exhibitions are organized by American Institute of Architects.

• London Architecture Festival – June 2022

London Architecture Festival will be held between 1 and 30 June. This year’s theme has been decided as “Act”. The events and activities will be taking place all around London.

• Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture – August-November 2022

Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture is a unique biennale happening simultaneously in two cities, Hong Kong and Shenzhen focusing on both urbanism and architecture. This year’s theme is announced as “Seeds of Resilience”.

• Ibero-American Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (BIAU) – September 2022

The biennale will take place in Mexico this September. The main theme has been announced as “Habitar al Margen” (Living on the margins) curated by Anna Vergés, Guillem Augé, Raúl Cárdenas and Ana Martínez.

• Lisbon Architecture Triennale – September – December 2022

The Triennale will be held between 29 September and 5 December. The main theme has been announced as Terra “with different meanings, depending on the scale and the observer, expressing territory, city, landscape, the place where we belong or a continent seen from the sea”. The event will be curated by Cristina Veríssimo and Diogo Burnay.

• Oslo Architecture Triennale – September 2022

Oslo Architecture Triennale will have its opening between 21 and 25 September with the curation of Christian Pagh. This year’s theme has been announced as “Mission Neighbourhood – (Re)forming communities“.

• Tallinn Architecture Biennale – September – October 2022

Tallinn Architecture Biennale will take place between September and October this year. The main theme is announced as “Edible; Or, The Architecture of Metabolism”. It will be curated by Lydia Kallipoliti, Areti Markopoulou in collaboration with Chief Local Advisor Ivan Sergejev.

• CAFx Copenhagen Architecture Festival – October 2022

The festival will take place between 6 and 16 October. The theme of the festival has been announced as “the sense of the place“.

• Venice Biennale of Architecture – 2023

Venice Biennale of Architecture was originally planned to happen in 2020 and then respectively in 2022. However, the 2020 exhibition had to be rescheduled due to Covid-19. It was held between 22 May and 21 November in 2021 instead.

Therefore, the next International Architecture Exhibition will be happening in 2023. It is announced to be curated by Lesley Lokko. You can read more here.


Awards to be announced this year:

• 2022 Pritzker Architecture Prize – 15 March 2022

The 2022 Pritzker Architecture Prize Winner will be announced on March 15th at 10 am EST! Stay tuned!

2022 RIBA Awards

Royal Gold Medal 2022 recipient is announced as the acclaimed architect Balkrishna Doshi who was also the 2018 Pritzker Award Winner.

Aga Khan Award for Architecture

Aga Khan Award for Architecture announced their 2022 Master Jury in January. The Master Jury will select a shortlist of projects that are to be reviewed by experts soon. This summer, the jury will have on-site reviews and then will announce the winner.
